“THE EGO OF SPIRITUAL SEEKERS”

Many of us who consider ourselves spiritual seekers appear to possess a wealth of spiritual knowledge and also to understood about enlightenment and many other spiritual concepts.

However, we are not very good at actually observing ourselves and seeing through the facts, without the mind (ego).

As a result, we don’t look deeply into ourselves with the clarity of innermost stillness, nor do we even come new realizations or insights, nor do we know about the inevitable and fundamental transformation that would result—for example, allow us, through seeing through the facts as they are, become aware of previously unaware assumptions, and liberate ourselves from the phantom “I” self that is nothing more than thought, and of course, in the end our life don’t change into easier and simpler.

So, even though we seem to see ourselves, we don’t actually see anything. So we remain stuck in the same “I” separate self-perception, and keep strengthening that “I” ego, that is only in thought without realizing it – constantly keep comparing, judging, defining, regretting about something, or feeling proud about something.

As a result, we tend to take the words and actions of others personally, and our knee-jerk reactions tend to desparately prove ourselves and thoughts we think is our own, “Who’s right?”, “You’re wrong about XX”, “You’re right”, “You’re so amazing!”, or etc. Moreover, we are prone to emotional arguments, conformity, or worship, etc., which we see as simply a matter of right and wrong.

However, spiritual awakening or enlightenment is never by the personal “I” self, but the awareness itself becomes “aware” of itself, the Self, through pure awareness,

It is certainly not about correctly memorizing the teachings of some sages, nor about understanding them intellectually or conceptually, nor is it about how much spiritual knowledge one possesses.

The most important key here is to completely let go of desires and eagerness of the mind (ego) such as “wanting to be enlightened” or “wanting to be right.”

Whatever desires or eagerness may be, they all arise unconsciously from the illusory “I” that is the memory of the known (past).

That is the very illusion of “‘I’ self that must become someone.”

Furthermore, all of these is, we believe, the purpose to be achieved through effort or control of the illusory “self”

However, enlightenment is something that is naturally realized through awareness only when one completely let go of such doership by the “l” self and completely surrenders goals, desires, effort, control, or so and even the “I” self to the unknown.

It is never that the “I” self attains enlightenment or spiritual awakening.

On the contrary, “l” self will be surely dismantled and dissolved through clarity of seeing.

In fact, at the moment of enlightenment, awareness, or insight, the “I” self does not exist anywhere at all.

Otherwise, since truth is non-dual, identification with the illusory “I” self will still the same remaining as a veil that obscures the truth, and awareness will never become aware of itself.

So if there is no spontaneous and fundamental transformation that should naturally occur with enlightenment, realization or insight, then not only have we not fully surrender the mind (ego), but it is simply another delusion, a disguise of the mind (ego) that further strengthens and perpetuates its identification with “I”, another thought that is merely secondhand knowledge that we think is our own.
