“THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY”
Religion and spirituality are similar but not the same.
Religion is originally a way to connect with spirituality, and although its essence is a connection to spirituality, most religions have become hollowed out into specific rituals and doctrines.
In fact, it is very rare for people to truly build the connection with spirituality through religion or find a way to live guided by something called God. Most people are obsessed with the world that their mind (ego) sees as ideal, through the control of their mind (ego) which judges good and evil, or are immersed in a kind of self-suggestion, collective suggestion, such as a subjective religious experience or a known religious view.
It is a form of escapism that strongly rebels against the mind (ego) while denying one’s own mind (ego).
In many cases, there is very strong psychological pain hidden there, a wound that has not been healed and still ache.
Therefore, while identifying the self with the mind (ego), and considering the self (mind, ego) as bad, people often take great pride in their “personal self,” for example, by performing religiously correct actions, correctly understanding doctrines, or by taking some religious stance. And thereby, naturally, they are also very attached to the mind (ego) of goodness.
This is a kind of indulgence to religion, and it has the same structure as addiction.
There is so full of mind (ego) there within them that there is not even the slightest bit of room for unknown possibilities or the connection with spirituality.
However, it is true that wherever there is good, there is always evil. Good is simply evil not manifested.
On the other hand, spirituality is an inherent aspect of a person that is the basis for a person to transform from recognizing the “personal self” as a separated and isolated existence, to building healthy psychological connections with others, and at the same time, clarifying the boundaries between self and others, and then finally becoming aware of The Self as a whole.
When we lose this connection to the inherent spirituality, and moreover, when we lose healthy connections with others as well, we eventually come to avoid the instability or loneliness by becoming addicted to various types of objects.
This is a completely natural reaction of life of humans.
It means, in contrast, if we can rebuild healthy connections with others and build connections with the inherent spirituality, we will be able to recover physically, psychologically, and spiritually from addiction, at least, leaving aside the already damaged physical tissues.
This is why the antonym of addiction is not sober or clean, but connection.
In other words, if we truly long to find a connection with God, we need to completely let go of indulgence to religion for once, which has become a mere formality, and after building a connection with the inherent spirituality, we will be able to reexamine our connection with religion once again and transform that relationship into a healthier one.
