“HOW TO PROCEED WITH SELF-INQUIRY AND SELF-OBSERVATION”
Self-inquiry ultimately leads naturally toward awareness of The Self, but that should never be the goal.
On the contrary, if that is the goal, self-realization (awareness of The Self) will be impossible due to the attachment of the mind (ego).
What is needed is a simple yet pure curiosity to know about what you are most interested in and longing to comprehend the ultimate that springs from far deeper than the mind (ego), such as “Why do these phenomena appear?”, “What is behind it?”, “Is it true love when we say we love someone and then kill them?”
With this curiosity and longing, everything else will naturally follow in the best time for each.
This “other things will naturally follow” is so-called “providence (unknown), or cosmic order.”
It means, if, with absolute trust in that unknown, and with surrendering the mind (ego) completely once you have done the minimum that you really need to do (for instance, surrendering the mind (ego), and remain its state with no the worries, predictions, or etc. that attach to the mind (ego) are also surrendered), and if you can completely entrust everything else to the unknown, then all things will fall into place, and the best path will open up further in front of you, in a natural flow.
Therefore, if you are unsure of your curiosity or longing, do not jump straight to any spiritual conclusions, but humbly begin to ask yourself, “What do I want to know, not the desires of Mind (ego)?”
Once you know (it’s enough for your awareness of the self at the point) what your curiosity and longing are, anyone can naturally see what is needed next.
In fact, spiritual awakening always deepens when we are at our most humble, with no predictions, expectations, intentions, efforts, wills, or judgments of any kind by the mind (ego), and no mind (ego) itself at all.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
Self-observation is mainly to clarify ( for becoming aware of the fact), the workings of the mind (ego), reactions, and its habits of interpretation or projection, what stories the mind creates from what phenomena and how we immerse ourselves in that drama, what the results are in return, the groundlessness of the interpretation, the uncertainty of what we call reality ( illusion). In addition, this self-observation and sometimes self-inquiry will inevitably lead us to dismantle our own unconscious.
This means that the unconscious is a state in which the body is awake but the consciousness remains dormant (more than 90% is unconscious), where many mind (ego) related assumptions and stubborn beliefs lurk. Thus, the self-observation, especially in the early stages, begins from dealing with past events, things that have already happened, like yesterday, or an event involving a special person, and so on, to clarify what is going on by the mind (ego).
As you recall a symbolic event, observe only the facts, down to the smallest detail, as if looking at the whole picture from a higher (impersonal) perspective, not as a third party or as a personal mind (ego).
For instance, “What was I expecting at that time, and then, how did I receive, interpret the phenomenon that was returned to me?”
Then, “What does it seem that the other person received from me at that time?”
As we dismantle the unconscious one by one in this way, we become aware of the illusions we have been holding on to unconsciously, and through its awareness, we can come to awaken our own dormant essence and naturally open invisible eyes to see the essence of things. Therefore, at that point, the unconscious patterns that have actually been dismantled will surely disappear (i.e., one of the spiritual assignment is completed).
Through such the realization of the fact as they are, we finally come to comprehend that the mind (ego) works in the same way, whether it is our own or someone else’s, there is no difference between oneself and the other people, and that the mind (ego) is not something to be feared, to control, or to wipe out, but to become aware of it and accept it as it is.
Furthermore, at the same time, through such selfless self-observation and self-inquiry, we unknowingly steadily deepen detachment from the mind (ego) without any intention whatsoever.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
The minimum requirement for both self-inquiry and self-observation is non-judgment, that is, doing in the complete innermost stillness.
On the contrary, observation with judgment (which is not stillness) is what the mind (ego) does casually in everyday life, judging what has already happened or what has already done, such as what was good or bad about what you said or did or what others said or did, or what should be done, and imposing the mind’s (ego’s) selfish ideal on people (including oneself).
This is not observation, but rather surveillance for control by the mind (ego).
As a result of this surveillance, we will see, for instance…
– No matter how hard the mind (ego) tries to become a better person by surveillance and repeatedly trying to improve, we have an unconscious mind (said to be over 90% of our consciousness), and naturally, since we are unaware of it, we cannot improve our behavior during that time.
– Even if we strengthen the surveillance to eliminate the unconsciousness, the resulting stress can cause extreme physical and mental fatigue, making relationships a chore, and even leading to self-hatred and misanthropy.
– Depending on the judgment, we can become depressed or, conversely, arrogant, and realizing that we ourselves are creating a roller coaster for ourselves to ride.
In this way, we come to realize that surveillance by the mind (ego) is ineffective at all, and we will eventually begin to self-observation and self-inquiry in the complete stillness.
Only then will we be able to observe things as they really are.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
What is required for this observation in stillness is the concentration that naturally deepens with the pure curiosity and longing described earlier.
It is, for instance, if you concentrate on a single object that is physically several tens of meters away, at a certain moment, the sound of the outside world completely disappears, the distance between you and the object that is physically several tens of meters away also disappears, and only it and you exist, as if you can reach it.
Or, if you concentrate on a single point on a wall, at a certain moment, you pass through the wall (the physical distance disappears) and begin to become one with nature, such as the quiet buzzing of insects outside or the rustling of the wind.
Or, although it feels like you have spent a very long time doing so, but in reality it was only a few minutes or tens of minutes, or conversely, although it should have been just a few minutes, but it can turn out to be hours (we realize clearly that time is just a concept).
In this way, we unintentionally cultivate the ability to concentration through repeated self-observation and self-inquiry. And at that point, we are actually in complete stillness.
Paradoxically, we do not search within for inner stillness, nor wait for it to become quiet, nor measure how much we are concentrated. Instead, we are simply driven by pure curiosity and longing for the questions, unknowns, or things that we want to understand at that moment, and it naturally makes us become concentrated.
And as a result, we are engaged in self-inquiry and self-observation in complete stillness.
At this time, the mind (ego) is naturally surrendered to the unknown.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
In this way, we gradually and unknowingly go deeper and deeper into the further depths of stillness.
It eventually leads us, unexpectedly and completely, to a moment of transcendence of duality.
Moreover, the more we become accustomed to this kind of self-observation and self-inquiry, the more time we naturally do them as following the path to God, gradually but surely, and as a result of it, the more we become aware of a fact we were previously unaware of, the more the unconscious is further dismantled, the more we become spiritually awakened, and even unintentionally, the more continuously self-observation will eventually become natural part of daily life.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
None of us, as mind (ego), wants to fool ourselves into thinking we know something important by acquiring some awesome knowledge, or to feel like becoming somebody temporarily.
Rather, we all have longing to find the path to God within, and by taking one step at a time, we hope, eventually one day, self-realization that we ourselves are an unimaginable, impersonal consciousness itself.
And it is a reason we come to this earth, the place of experience, because we long for the joy of experiencing and living its magnificent consciousness, in the sublimest level, which is far beyond the realm of the individual.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
Every path (experience) is all leading there.
And there is nothing wrong or fail in our experiences in any respects.
If we feel something was wrong, it was because we wanted to know (comprehend) through that experience that it was wrong (not align with the essence). Or, we may have wanted to actually see what kind of experience it would lead to.
Only because the truth cannot be comprehended as self-realization without them, we always have been choosing all of them on a spiritual level.
It is never because something about you is wrong, or because you have chosen to wrong.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
The “experience” here is not for something to tickle the ego of “personal I,” nor for something to be ashamed of as well, but always for observing as a pure “opportunity to comprehend the essence, or to follow the path to God.”
What we have accomplished so far, how hard we have overcome, what is hard or painful, who is terrible, or contrary, what is best, etc., are nothing more than a temporary dream, illusion seen by the mind (ego).
Do not participate in such stories and dramas the mind (ego) creates, but become aware of the mind (ego) that sees things in this way, and recognizing the unnaturalness deviation from the essence that arises from identifying with that mind (ego), and so use any experience wisely as a tool to return to the essence.
Nevertheless, in order to be able to come there, there are necessary experiences for each one, so it is important to experience carefully each and every one of mind’s (ego’s) attachment or illusions, without denying or trying to remove any of them, no matter what kind of attachment or illusion the mind (ego) may have.
In this way, let the unknown take care of itself, with pure faith, and the invisible paths will open up naturally before us, as providence, cosmic order.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
Everything is far beyond the world known to the mind (ego), connected and influencing each other, all functioning as the only one consciousness, and at the same time, the Self, the Absolute Reality, the Essence, is purely observing all of this, without going anywhere or doing anything.
And it is precisely because the mind (ego) can never understand these things, there is a moment of surrender the mind (ego) that become possible, and it leads us even become able to realize consciousness itself, the True Self.
