“ON HOLD AND SMALL WORK.”
If we don’t understand something now, put it on hold as we don’t know it.
If it is uncomfortable and difficult to hold on to what we don’t know, then explore deep into ourselves why it is so difficult for us.
We need to clarify what emotions and thoughts are caused by not knowing or understanding, accept ourselves as we are now, and dig deeper to clarify the beliefs that support those emotions and where those beliefs come from.
Once we are able to realize that the mind (ego) is baseless or that its preoccupations are actually keeping us blinded through self-inquiry (i.e., the mind (ego, false-self) has been dismantled), the next step is to accept the fact that in life, there is much that is unknown and beyond our understanding.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
On hold what we don’t know as we don’t know it means to give ourselves room as the possibility that what we don’t know now will be understood at the divine timing if we live carefully in the present moment by moment, and at the same time to trust that the unknown (consciousness, God) will take care of everything that is beyond what we can grasp “now.”
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
However, our mind (ego) is often unable to hold on to what it does not know, and tends to egoistically make assumptions about what it does not know, or jump to answers that the mind (ego) yearns for.
In order to let go of such unconscious patterns of the mind (ego), it is necessary, above all, to become aware of their unnecessaryness, in other words, to have awareness about what we are doing now.
This awareness can allow us to further inquire ourselves and digging much deeper into ourselves, thereby coming to ensure that the mind (ego) is dismantled.
The reason these small works are important is because, in the end, none of us can become someone else, no one else can live our lives for us. That’s why we ourselves all need to find each answers within ourselves through these small works.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
There is a saying, “Kill two birds with one stone,” which does not only describe the mind-level gain of throwing one stone and getting two birds. More often than not, our mind (ego) does not actually see a fact as it is, and even if we do not see even one bird when we throw one stone, the more that mind (ego) is surrendered (i.e., the more the heart is opened through small work), the more clearly we can see that we actually have a tremendous amount in our hands. In other words, if it is a pure action without any expectation or prediction when throwing of a single stone, that is, beyond the action where doership is completely surrendered, it includes that there will eventually be a non-dual worldview that goes far beyond the two birds and transcends the dual world.
For instance, it would be wonderful if, by inquiring ourselves, we could realize at once that “this ‘I’ is the Self, far beyond the mind’s personal level,” but in fact, in the rush for results, it can often be that, not only we apply knowledge and has not been reached that realization at all, but we are actually in self-denial, self-escape. Therefore, rather than rushing to reach the ultimate answer, as the saying goes, “Haste makes waste and turn around,” and by inquiring ourselves as small works over and over again is the most down-earth action, thereby we can strengthen connection to the innermost stillness and, by digging deeper, will eventually be able to increase much more possibility that we can transcend duality.
Of course, there will be times when we will not feel the change and we will want to stop doing the small work, and in fact, we might actually stop. If there are such times, we can start again whenever we are ready to go further.
As long as we ourselves do not completely give up our heart’s longing to “comprehend the truth, the essence,” or to “savor the ultimate love,” each will be rewarded according to our level of dedication. In other words, the more we move toward trusting our own guiding consciousness (God, Higher Self), the more trustworthy sense it will inevitably become within us.
࿓࿓࿓࿓࿓
In order to comprehend that behind everything that the mind sees, there is, in fact, a non-dual aspect that can never be grasped simply by looking at it dualistically, or to comprehend the non-dual world by actually transcending the dual world, we must “on hold what we don’t know,” sincerely be in the present moment and continue small works that dismantling the mind through self-inquiry, and deepening the connection with innermost stillness, thereby naturally connecting to universal wisdom, will be of great help.
Always cherish the “now.” (OM 🙏)
