“HOW MUCH CAN WE LET GO?”

When the true purpose of our life is spiritual awakening, what really matters is “How much can we let go (surrender)?” rather than “How much have we got?” This is by no means a formality, superficial, but rather a letting go of attachments to all things, and in particular, the surrender of such the ego that makes us proud of ourselves what we could let go of something is the most important key.

This surrender of mind, ego is not to act as if the ego does not exist, nor is it to control and suppress the ego so that it does not run amok. As the essence, we just surrender the ego. Because it is not only not the essence, it is an illusion, and thus, even if we struggle with the illusion, it’s like grasping at the air, so necessity is that we merely surrender it to the unknown.

Furthermore, it is to let go of everything that makes us feel proud, anything that seems to prove our goodness, rightness, or superiority. It is only the ego that feels such pride, which in turn means that without such things we would not feel proud of who we are. As a matter of fact, where those things are stripped away, there is a necessary gap of mind to unravel the ultimate question, “Who am I?”

The truth is that consciousness itself does not need anything to feel pride. There is no need to be good or right or superior than someone else at all. Because consciousness is perfect by itself, and there is even no separated someone else anywhere in the first place.

Other than that, we need to remain constantly paying attention to ourselves in order to have a clear view of what we ourselves need to let go of. It is a constant self-observation without any judgment and with detachment of the ego, not others.
If we could really do this, we would comprehend that the things we need to let go of are far more varied than we can imagine, and furthermore that in terms of deepening spiritual awakening, paying attention to anyone other than ourselves is actually a waste of precious “now” time for ourselves.

Because while we pay attention to anything other than our own “now (movement)” for comparison or judgment, such as “how others are doing” or “I am _ compared to” or “I am able to do _,” none of us are able to take own responsibility. During this time, we are completely unaware of ourselves, both internally and externally, which is equivalent to giving up a valuable opportunity to learn about ourselves, so to speak, and in fact, our ego (unconsciousness) is on the loose during this time. And at time like this, we are all in a state of being easily motivated by the unconscious reaction. This is so-called “irresponsibility.”

The ego is so clever that, like a magician, it always acts as if it is the “I, the essence,” and can even convince itself that it is so. And if we neglect self-observation, none of us will even be aware of such delusion.

So we need to be ever vigilant against this egoic cleverness, and only then will we be able to continue to detach (surrender) it. (OM 🙏)
