“WHAT IS DIFFICULT FOR US.”
One of the difficult for us is “not to”.
Not to react.
Not to identify.
Not to overthink.
Not to resist.
Not to strive.
This “not to do” is difficult for us, but in fact, in order to deepen spiritual awakening, this “not to do” which can be chosen only when we recognize the unnecessary as unnecessary, is a must.
Furthermore, if it is difficult to “not to” from the beginning without realization, it is also difficult to stop in the middle without realization.
In detail, although the manifest mind is aware of what it is doing, of course, but awareness is not aware of it (awareness does not recognize it as “egoic reaction, unconsciousness”), all of these reactions inevitably lead to the ego’s enlargement.
Moreover, even when we were vaguely aware of that it is the ego as we are reacting, for instance, if we are not yet able to detach completely from the ego (the difference between the ego and the Self is not yet clear, which means when we are still in a state of identification with the ego), we are easily drawn to the ego’s greedy energy. This means that we unconsciously give the initiative to the ego. And this is one of the reasons why we feel ashamed of ourselves and dislike the ego, but this is actually what we call the identification of the ego with the Self. And the fact that we cannot easily recognize this unconscious identification is one of the factors preventing the spiritual awakening.
And, even though the realization of the truth through mystical experiences, etc., can never guarantee the deepening of spiritual awakening, nevertheless, we, before enlightenment, have the illusion that spiritual awakening can be achieved by a single thing, due to the mind’s (ego’s) self-serving delusion, is also one of the factors that stops us the actual deepening of spiritual awakening, even if it is only temporarily.
And moreover, it is said that the unconsciousness (ego) accounts for more than 90% of our conscious (some say more than 95%).
This means that if we ourselves are unaware of our own unconsciousness (if awareness is not aware of its own unconsciousness all the time), no matter how awake we think we are physically and spiritually, it will never be able to say that we grasp the whole picture due to only the remaining 5% as our manifest mind, nor will we even be able to be in the present (i.e., about 90% of the rest is spiritually asleep, awareness is unaware of it).
In other words, that what is most difficult for us is actually to become aware of our own unconsciousness itself. And this is why continue to deepen spiritual awakening is so difficult, and at the same time, this is why it is said that being aware of this unconsciousness is tremendously important.
In order to choose “not to do or to stop” whatever it is, we must be aware of the unnecessary first, and that’s way we always need to be in a state of highly alart as awareness. And this state is what can be possible to constant observation by consciousness itself, as a mere witness.
This is the so-called the spiritually awake state, but in fact, rather than always being spiritually awake, there are countless times when we are spiritually asleep again without realizing it (even if we are awake once, we fall into the ego trap, unconsciousness again and again without realizing it). It means that it can say that our life is almost totally controlled by the unconsciousness.
Thus, every time we realize it (in fact, only then can we do), the work of detachment ourselves from the ego becomes essential.
And this process will make the difference within us between ego and Self clearer and also the detachment from the ego itself more certain.

This fact that we first become aware of an unconscious action after we have done it, then next while we are doing it, and lastly only after recognition of unnecessary can we finally choose to “stop,” is, from another angle, that it can say that what we need to work on at first is the most difficult part of process of spiritual awakening, and yet, it is also true that the more we become aware of our unconsciousness, and the more we detach from the ego each time, the simpler and more fulfilling life becomes, and the more our inner calmness naturally expands.
